A Tournament for Emily

A girls basketball tournament to remember Emily Inglis.

Emily Inglis was born on Feb. 19, 1990. She grew up like most other kids in Port Coquitlam, BC. She went to pre-school, then elementary school. She had swimming, skating and gymnastics lessons, enjoyed skiing and loved soccer. She was a Spark and then a Brownie, loved camping with her family, crafts and animals especially her dog Shayna. She dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. Emily was always small for her age but what she lacked in size she more than made up for in energy, enthusiasm and volume. She loved to be in the centre of the action whether in school, on the playground or on the soccer field. She enjoyed having lots of friends around and her bubbling personality and infectious laughter could fill a room.

In August of 1999 Emily’s life took a turn when she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer. She started spending long stretches of time at the B.C. Children’s Hospital receiving intensive chemotherapy and radiation therapy. She quickly made new friends with both other patients and hospital staff. She always had a very strong will and a positive attitude. She still wanted to be just a regular kid so whenever possible she attended school and played soccer with her friends. When she was feeling good she packed in as many fun activities as she could. Emily’s battle with cancer went on for almost three years but sadly on June 1, 2002 she passed away at Canuck place.

It is a special tribute to Emily’s spirit that she has been named the honouree of this tournament. Emily will always be remembered by her family, friends and because of this special event, even by people who never had the chance to meet her. We would like to thank everyone involved in this tournament for all their hard work in making it such a success. The donations made make a difference to other kids facing difficult challenges.
